OAC Day 2 - Finding Direction
Communication, direction, and exploration! That’s what today’s activity is all about! On our hike through Grotto Canyon, our OAC campers will learn and employ skills about communication and finding their way to the right path.
Before heading off from the Grotto Canyon trailhead, our hikers discussed communication skills and the effects of ‘rock brain’. Once on the trail, our campers’ communication skills were put to the test. Everyone got into pairs, and had to get blindfolded! One member of the team was to safely navigate them down the trail.
Once everyone’s communication skills had been warmed up, it was onto the main trail. Leading through the mountains, Grotto Canyon offered stunning views. Nearing the end of the maintained trail, the canyon gave way for a spectacular view of the water fall with an open area for a lunch break.
After a much needed lunch break, everyone continued on a little longer to find space to build Inukshuks! Inukshuks can be very important tools for marking the correct path of a trail. Not much as definitively known about the purpose of these structures, but on most trails, they are seen as harmful to the environment. They go against the mantra of, “leave no trace.” Because of this, after building, everyone tore theirs down, and headed back for camp.
