Cultivating Resilience

Our first week has flown by! Since Wednesday, we have gone on some hikes and continued to explore various leadership skills.

On Wednesday, we talked about the various kinds of relationships we have in our lives and how they all differ from one another. We have relationships with our friends, teachers, and parents and sometimes, relationships can be confusing and overwhelming. In these cases, what’s the best thing that we can do? Cricket led us through conversations pertaining to the qualities found in good and bad relationships and reinforced the importance of advocating for ourselves and what we need. We then made posters with the qualities of a good relationship and discussed the importance of honesty and communication.

When we think about relationships, it is also important to think about what our potential needs are and what we value as individuals. In this regard, we all took the 16 Personalities test. After a comprehensive questionnaire, this test goes in depth into the various aspects of each of our personalities, our strengths and weaknesses, and provides a greater lens into understanding aspects of ourselves. We finished off our day with a visit to the garden where we cleaned up pathways, weeded, and replanted wild strawberries.

Thursday was our first big hike. We started off the day by playing a game of belly baseball to get our energy up before repacking our bags and making sure that we were only taking necessary items with us. Throughout the hike, we made sure to pace ourselves so as to not lose our energy too quickly. We also made sure to take consistent breaks to keep up on our fluids and have a snack if need be. Along our hike, we stopped at the river and Brotula taught us about water filtration. At times, the hike was challenging, but we all did our best to push ourselves and maintain positive self talk.

Today our focus was on leadership styles and how we can be leaders within our communities. Axel asked us who we think the leaders in our life are and we discussed aspects of what make them good leaders. We discussed that most often lead by example. Therefore, it is important to think about our actions as there may be those around us who look up to us. We then went to the drop in centre and sorted through some donations from a local hotel.

That’s all for this week, but we are so excited for another adventurous upcoming week!
