Day 2: Healthy Relationships
Today was another great day here at Camp Amicus! After we welcomed in our campers, it was time for camp wide game. Today we played Hostage. We had two teams, and each team gave up a counsellor (our hostage) for the other team to hide on their side of the field. Once counsellors were hidden, each team had to try and find their missing counsellor without getting caught! As with any game, sometimes we can disagree on what happened, or find that something is not fair. If we ever have instances like this at camp, we always encourage our campers to talk with a counsellor or to rock, paper, scissors it out. Whoever wins the game of rock, paper, scissors makes the final decision.

After camp wide game, we transitioned into social skills. Social skills is an important component of our program here at Camp Amicus. Each day, we take time to focus on social skills that aid in the development of peer relations, emotional regulation, and provide us with the tools we need to tackle the challenges we face daily. For today’s social skill, Aurora talked with campers about healthy relationships. We discussed how sometimes relationships can be overwhelming, confusing, and even a little bit awkward. A good question to ask your camper might be, what are some examples of relationships? Today at camp, we discussed friendships, partner relationships, teacher relationships, sibling relationships, and the relationships we would have with our parents/guardian.

An important part of any relationship is setting boundaries. Today we participated in a space themed activity where we went up to other campers and asked them questions. Campers had the opportunity to say yes or no to the question. We practiced how to say no, and how we could potentially offer an alternative such as, “I don’t want a high five, but I would like an elbow”. A good question to ask your camper may be, what are some ways we can encourage healthy boundaries in other parts of our lives?
After social skills, we had clubs. Today in clubs, we had eco printing in STEM, we worked on our basketball skills in Sports Club, and we listened to different genre’s of music and drew our favourite animals in Art/Music Club.
