Day 2: Zones of Regulation
What another wonderful and creative day at camp! After announcements this morning, we jumped into a camp wide game of Temple of Doom. Campers took turns running through a flurry of dodgeballs in order to secure bean bags and turtles that they would then bring back to their side of the field. If campers were hit with a dodgeball, they would drop the item they were carrying and try again.

Following camp wide game, was our first social skill activity. Social skills are an important component of our program here at Camp Amicus. Each day, we take time to focus on social skills that aid in the development of peer relations, emotional regulation, and provide us with the tools we need to tackle the challenges we face daily. For today’s social skill, Monarch and Aurora talked with us about the four zones of regulation. These zones include: the Blue Zone (upset, sad, tired, sick, bored, confused, stressed), the Green Zone (calm, happy, okay, focused, ready to learn, alert), the Yellow Zone (excited, frustrated, annoyed, worried, silly/wiggly, nervous, anxious), and the Red Zone (mad/angry, mean, panicked, intense feelings, need time and space). With Aurora, campers drew or wrote what the four zones meant to them on a tile, and created tile art by adding rubbing alcohol and then burning it (with close supervision of course). Aurora explained to us that, like the colours that blended together on our tiles, sometimes we can feel like we’re in more than one zone at a time. With Monarch, campers worked together to discuss the zones of regulation and what each zone meant to them. We also worked through a variety of scenarios as to how we might feel if we were in those situations and how we could help regulate ourselves. A good question to ask your campers may be, what are some strategies that you can use to help re-regulate yourself when you are in the blue, yellow, and red zones?

Next up, it was time for clubs and then lunch. At STEM Club, we worked on our paper airplane skills. In Music/Art Club, we coloured to different songs as we thought about how the songs made us feel. In Sports Club, we worked on our basketball skills.
Before we knew it, it was time for lunch and then choice! For choice this afternoon, we had sock puppet mkaing with Bullseye, gaga ball with Phoenix and carnival games with Bronto!

After choice, we had a snack and water before transitioning to Steps in the Right Direction and then then free time.
That’s all for today, but we cannot wait for another wonderful day at camp tomorrow.
