Day 3: Recognizing Emotion

Day 3.jpg

It was another fantastic day out here at camp!

We began with announcements and a petition to keep Solo from being slimed. Only time will tell to see if it works. Be sure to ask your camper which counsellor they want to get slimed. Afterwards we moved to the forest to play capture the flag! Campers enjoyed darting through the forest, dodging trees and searching for the other team’s flag.

Once capture the flag ended, we refuelled and went back outside for social skill. The focus today was recognizing emotion. Campers were tasked with silently acting out different emotions to a partner. Their partner then had to guess which emotion they were showing. Campers were also involved in a game of Emotional Cardio-Pictionary. They chased counsellors to receive emotions, then silently drew those emotions on a whiteboard. Their group then guessed which emotion they were drawing.

We learned that everyone expresses their emotions in different ways. For example, it was often difficult to differentiate sad from angry and we discovered that happiness looks different depending on person. We learned that asking questions and paying attention to body language is the key to recognizing emotions in others. We also made stress balls to help regulate our own emotions!

Following social skill was clubs. We separated into our sport, art and outdoor skills groups and got started. In Sport Club, the group played some soccer. It started with simple passes, then progressed into soccer gaga ball! In Art Club we made masks out of paper plates, and in Outdoor Skills Club we learned new knots and how to use them.

Next up was lunch then choice. Campers had the option of canoeing with Yogi or archery with Oak. In canoeing, we learned how to enter and exit a canoe, basic strokes and played canoe dodgeball. We also had time to explore the pond and two of our campers saw a deer! In archery we honed our skills and worked on hitting that elusive bullseye. When we weren’t channeling our inner Princess Merida, we were playing gaga ball and honing our skills there!
