Day 6: Recognizing Body Language

Good everyone!

It was a smoky day, but that didn’t stop us from having fun at camp! We modified the schedule to have most of our activities inside for the day. However, there were a few that took place outside that were low energy.

We started our day with a new camp game called Phobias. In this game, campers must work as a group to determine what the counselors are scared of. Some were scared of a certain colour, some were scared of other counselors, and some were scared of certain letters. We had a lot of fun deducing their fears and bringing them across the field to Solo!

After camp wide game, we had a quick snack before transitioning to social skill. Today, campers worked on recognizing body language. Oak explained that we use body language to communicate and to express ourselves during conversation. We practiced recognizing body language through games of emotion telephone, handshake detective and mirror master. In each of these activities, campers showed an emotion to a partner without speaking, who then had to determine what that emotion was. We learned that it can sometimes be difficult to recognize body language and that everyone expresses emotions in different ways. Often, when a person’s words do not match their body language, it can be confusing to understand what that person is feeling. Learning to match these is an important skill we worked on! We then discussed common actions (when someone's arms are crossed, a thumbs up, a shrug, etc) that can help us recognize how a person may be feeling. A great question to ask campers at home is, what are other non- verbal indicators of how a person is feeling? How should we react when we see these non-verbal cues?

For choice, campers had the option to go to the Amicus spa, learn how to be a spy or make posters for kangaroo court! At the spa, campers made home-made face masks and painted each other's nails. In the spy academy, they honed their skills with games of Ninja, wax museum and camouflage. In poster making, campers made signs either in support or against the counsellors getting slimed (there are a lot of campers that want T-Bone to get slimed).

After some lovely words at Steps in the Right Direction, we said goodbye to the campers for the day.

See you tomorrow!
