Day 3: Healthy Relationships

It was another beautiful day here at camp! We began with announcements and choice sign up before moving to our camp wide game of cardio Pictionary! This is similar to regular Pictionary, but campers must chase down counsellors to receive the word to draw for their group!

Next up was social skill, where the focus was on building and maintaining healthy relationships. With both Solstice and Spice-E, we first discussed traits that define a healthy relationship: trust, effective communication and respect. We then practiced using these skills in different activities. With Solstice, half of us were blindfolded and walked within a circle. Our partners (who were not blindfolded) were tasked with keeping us from walking into each other and from leaving the circle. It was a great display of trust and communication.

With Spice-E, we completed an egg drop challenge with a healthy relationship twist. We were all given eggs that represented a relationship we valued. This could be a friendship at school, the relationship we have with ourselves or anything else in between. We then strengthened the relationship (the egg) with traits of a healthy relationship (represented by string, paper, cups, playdough, etc) so it can survive through difficult times (dropping the egg off the bridge). Each material we used represented a different trait, and campers completed gaga ball challenges, relay races, a name-that-Disney-song competition and a popsicle stick tower build to gain as many materials as they could! We learned that the more healthy relationship traits our relationships have, the more resilient they are and the easier it is to repair them.

Following Social skill was clubs! In Outdoor Skills Club we went on a nature walk in search of the river, in Sports Club we played a version of handball in the forest and in Art Club we sprayed paint from squeeze bottles to make incredible art! The counsellors also received some new paint shirts in the process!

We then transitioned to lunch for a break and some food. After lunch, campers were excited for their choice activities of canoeing, archery or screen printing!

Before we knew it, it was time for steps in the right direction and the campers headed home shortly after.

It was a great day and we can’t wait to do it again tomorrow!
