Day 3: Communication

Just like that we are on day three of camp. This morning after we welcomed all of our campers, we played a couple of games of Human Tracker. Our official Amicus rules have three people who are chosen to be the trackers, while the rest of our campers and counsellors head off to find a hiding spot. The goal of the game is to not be found by the trackers, which is easier said than done. Campers found some fantastic hiding spots around the Foothills property and some even hid in plain sight! For camp wide alternative, we had Jenga and bracelet making.

After camp wide game, it was time for social skill. Today we discussed the five different types of communication. Campers, do you remember what these five different types of communication are? Verbal, non-verbal, written, digital, and listening. After discussing how we use these different forms of communication, we played a game of telephone charades. Campers lined up and one person was given a word to act out to another. Once they did so, the camper watching then tapped the shoulder of the next camper until every camper had seen the action. This game was difficult because we were not able to talk, and we were trying to guess what each person was acting out. In turn, we learned how much we rely on verbal communication in our everyday lives. We also discussed miscommunication and how important it is for us to advocate for ourselves when we need help.

Next up we had clubs. At STEM club, campers were working on projectiles. Campers had an opportunity to build a catapult and a popsicle shooter. Their goal was to be able to launch an item across the room. In Art/Music club today we made marble paintings. Campers created some beautiful art as they rolled a marble that was covered in paint across their papers. We also had an opportunity to play some music when we finished. In sports club, we played spike ball, water balloon dodgeball, and garbage bin toss. In all clubs today, campers had an opportunity to apply the communication and friendship skills we have discussed in the last two days.

Next up we had lunch and free time. What’s after lunch? Choice! Today for choice we had Astro leading wizard crafts, Solstice leading labyrinth, and T-Bone leading water games.

In wizard crafts, Astro taught us how to make wizard wands while we listened to Harry Potter music. We ended up with some beautiful and creative wands. In Labyrinth we made our way through a maze in the gym and then we played fortress dodgeball. In water games, we played freeze tag, water balloon toss, and we also did slip and slide bowling. If you were in water games today, what was your favourite game?
