ON 3 - DAY 4: What Others are Thinking / Kangaroo Court

Our penultimate day of camp started with a final polar plunge and then a morning meal of breakfast sandwiches with orange slices.

It was then time for choice. Today’s choices were comic book making, tag extravaganza, and horseback riding!

There were some awesome comics created, some epic tags made, and horses tamed.

After a quick transition it was time for lunch, which was build your own burritos with toppings and chips. We then had our rest hour before moving into our daily social skills.

Today’s social skill was “What others are thinking”. This skill helps our campers learn to recognize “cues” in communication, like body language and levels of interest. It also teaches our campers how to better predict conversations so they can communicate effectively, but not overstep boundaries and begin to interrupt or talk over someone.

A granola bar snack later and it was time for our camp wide game of the day. We played human tracker, an intense game of cat and mouse where humans have to hide and run away from the sinister human trackers.

Finally it was time, for the most terrifying, most bone shaking moment for any Amicus counsellor. It was time for KANGAROO COURT!

The crowd sat in pure anticipation as the right honourable judge Koda came to the stand. With a wave of the hand everyone fell into silence… They went on to explain that we were here to day, “To bring counsellors to justice for their crimes.” The crimes were read aloud to a mixture of boos and cheers. Two favourites were, “Rosewood doesn’t like us talking about pee and poop” and “Slime Mantaray for not being a cucumber”.

Bailiff Indie quietened down the rambunctious crowd, and the decision was made Moonbeam and Mantaray were called to the stand. Each party looking as guilty as the other. BUT! In a shocking turn of events Moonbeam was given an official kangaroo court pardon and Rodeo was called to the stand. After much back and forth with prosecutours and defense lawyers, it was decided Rodeo and Mantaray were to be slimed. The crowd appluaded in delight as the pair met their slimy justice.

We had butter chicken with rice, naan bread and salad for dinner. Before heading off to our closing campfire. We didn’t have a fire as we are under a fire ban, but, we still had a lot of fun singing songs and eating marshmallows.

It was then time to hand out steps one final time, and then we headed to bed excited for our very final day of camp.
